Whether you are already involved in Oral Surgery teaching and would like to pick up some top teaching tips and educational credence or just starting you career and wish to gain some educational knowledge and skills for the future, this is the course for you.
The course is held in the lovely surroundings of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and is limited to a small group of 16 to enable involvement and interaction. The atmosphere is always very relaxed and friendly with delegates ranging from DCTs to Oral Surgery consultants and with clinicians from primary and secondary care attending.
The course is very practical with examples and techniques related to Oral Surgery used throughout. The Course Tutors include Pippa Blacklock who is a Specialist Oral Surgeon working in secondary care and who has a Masters in clinical education and is actively involved with teaching and training for Oral Surgery and Dental professionals and Pat Dollard who is an educator involved in teaching and training of undergraduate teachers, clinicians taking certificates in clinical education and has had career as a Head Teacher!
The topics covered include: understanding how students learn, how to give a good lecture, how to make small group tutorials interactive, how to plan and structure a teaching session whether it is a lecture or supervising undergraduates or DCTs on a LA clinic, how to give feedback and the principles of assessment and how to evaluate your teaching to improve, virtual teaching and much much more.
You will work on a session plan for a teaching or training session you are or may be involved in throughout the course and the course finishes with a microteaching session for you to practice the new skills you have learnt. The course has been recognised for CPD by BAOS and there is also a link for progression to the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Education with the Postgraduate School of Medicine and Dentistry University of Plymouth for those who are interested. Please view flyer at bottom of page to give you an idea of what’s involved.
There is plenty of opportunity for you to meet and spend time with the other delegates who have often said the social aspect and opportunity to mix with colleagues from different areas of Oral Surgery practice has been a highlight of the course.
Feedback from past delegates have included the following:
