Rare Lesions of the Jaw Directory
The Rare Lesions of the Jaw (RLJ) Directory is a clinical registry that systematically collects information on patients with rare jaw lesions and their treatments. These benign lesions, whether odontogenic or non-odontogenic, may appear similar on imaging but can vary significantly in behaviour—some requiring complex management. While less invasive therapies are emerging, their long-term effectiveness remains uncertain. Advances in molecular and genomic understanding may enable more personalised treatment in the future.
The aim of the RLJ Directory is to gather data on the incidence, distribution, and current management of these lesions. This national service evaluation will serve as a reference guide to support diagnosis and foster constructive discussions around treatment strategies.
Given the rarity and histological diversity of RLJ, robust evidence is lacking, and randomised controlled trials are not feasible. Observational data from clinical registries provides the next best level of evidence to inform practice.
As many clinicians who manage benign lesions are also likely to come across rare lesions, we encourage BAOS members to participate in this important project.
What will participation involve?
The first step is to contact your hospital’s Information Governance or Audit department to register the audit. To support this process, the protocol and Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) are available below and should help with your application.
How does the project run?
Patient consent is managed entirely online. Patients will be asked to scan a QR code—using their phone, tablet, or computer either in the department or at home—which will direct them to an information leaflet and a digital consent form.
To mark the launch, BAOMS recently held a seminar focused on rare lesions. The session was recorded and is freely available to all—just register to access it here.
Please note the website and the processes are regularly updated.
We cannot give provide a link/QR as it is hospital specific, please email baomsprojectmanager@baoms.org.uk to obtain a hospital specific QR code.
